This painting is part of a triptych of paintings which represent the progressive movements of a triathlon athlete throughout each part of the race: cycling, running, and swimming. Montemayor’s seemingly chaotic use of black paint on a white canvas generates a sort of energy or vigor that characterizes the intense nature of the triathlon. There is a sense of movement not just in his portrayal of the athlete’s movement, but also in the artist’s movement as he painted. This reminded me of Project 1.1 because of how Montemayor was able to capture the everchanging motion of a triathlon athlete onto a set of still paintings. Even though the triptych is immobile, the audience still gets a clear sense of the repetitive movements the artist attempts to convey.
