This past Saturday, I made a trip to the Barnes Foundation in Center City. I was particularly struck by the Georges Seurat works that were on display, especially The Ladies’ Man (L’Homme à femmes). Seurat is known for a painting technique that he developed called Pointilism, which utilizes many small dots of varying colors in certain patterns to create different forms. The mixing and use of various colors is essential to the end result, and the technique is very deeply rooted in color theory.
